The Oostelijk Havengebied area in Amsterdam has once again been completely redeveloped as a metropolitan area with offices, housing and public amenities such as a hotel, a passenger terminal and a music centre. In order to make this part of the city readily accessible, the urban infrastructure has also been improved. Streets and bridges have been widened and the public transport system expanded.
The bridge over the Zouthaven is a connection between the 'Kop Oostelijke Handelskade' tram stop and the new music centre. The bridge is situated over the Zouthaven harbour that will once again be excavated, along the top of Oostelijke Handelskade. It is a suspension bridge with the tension cables extending gracefully under the steep bridge deck. The bridge forms the final feature of the new urban developments in this area. For this reason a high-grade spatial quality was aspired to with refined elaboration and structural detailing.
