Onderstaand beeld en tekst van de inzending onder motto 'Archimedes'

The near future?
Within a number of decades The Netheriands will Iose half of its land
surface to the sea. The map shown on the panel Is a prediction of the
geographic decline of the Netherlands if and when the sea level rises 1
meter. Already, the Netherlands are flooding many polders to create
buffer capacity for rain water, due to serious problems during the
nineties.
The law of Archimedes
Our contemporary house 'Archimedes' is therefore a floating house, capable of surviving any sea level rise. It could be produced In shipyards, which is a highly developed and innovative Dutch industry. The materials and building techniques are derived from the process of handling thick steel (8-20mm), resulting in strongly sculptural shapes and silhouets.
Quality of living
The house has a total surface of about 200 m2. The spaclous rooms are
located around the 'water-core' or 'water-heart', which is seen as the
central point of the house. The rain-water being collected on the roof
and running through that pipe should not only be used for functional
issues, but also for optional acustic or light-plays. Living, dining and
cooking on one level lead you to a sleeping-area upstairs or a workIngspace in the level below. These floors can also be reached over an
independant staircase on the outside. There is ample storage space
integrated In the double-walled facades and also In the cellar. A
spacious terrace looking over the waterlevel as well as a terrace on the
roof are offered. Further one could think about having a watergarden
reached over a plank bridge in front of the living area, which should
content some water-purifieing plants.
Autarchy is sustainable
This is a self-sufficient house, It has no connection to the main land
other than a bridge towards a dry infrastructure (for pedestrians, bikes,
cars etc.) or can be reached by boat. There exists neither electricity
cables, nor telephone cabies, nor water-works, nor sewege-works. This
contemporary house is processed from its own energy out of solar- and
wind power. Drinking water Is made out of rain and surface water.
Therefore 'Archimedes' Is a sustalnable solution for future living. The 2
kW windturbine is suffident to accomodate a comfortable way of living.
For flexible people
Moving is easy; a tow-boat brings you to your new location. The house
only needs to be connected to moring-buoy. This is made p~le with
the patented manchets that were developed by a shipyard near
Rotterdam (see photo).
Other locations
Not only in the Netherlands but also in other European countries like
Great Britain or lagoon regions in northern Italy could profit from the
design of Archimedes.
