Overheidsgebouwen

Renovatie + nieuwbouw ministerie van Volksgezondheid (gebouw Castalia)
Den Haag
1993 - 1999

Architect: Michael Graves and Associates (Michael Graves) - Princeton USA.

The headquarters for The Netherlands' Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport
is one component of a master plan for de Resident, a mixed-use development
of office buildings and housing that includes both new construction and renovation. The 29,215 square-meter project for the Ministry involved re-cladding
a 1950's building of jack-slab construction, replacing the building core, and
adding two annexes along Zwarteweg, one forming a gate to a new courtyard
and the other completing the street facade between Castalia and Zurich
Tower. The planar wall surfaces, fenestration pattern and new peaked roofs
of the twin 'towers' recall the character of traditional Dutch architecture and
establish Castalia as a landmark in the city.
